A Comprehensive Introduction to Hamsters

These rodents are discovered in a wide range of habitats, from northern Europe within a broad band across a great deal of Asia, apart from the southeastern corner. Twenty-four species are identified but, as in the gerbils, only one particular – the Golden, or Syrian, Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) – has turn into common as a pet all through the globe.

The Golden, or Syrian, Hamster

The Golden Hamster was initially discovered in 1839 and, forty years later, live specimens had been brought to England from Syria by James Skene, who had been serving there within the diplomatic service. This group appears to possess thrived for thirty years, with all the final progeny dying in 1910.

Subsequently, there appears to possess been none of those rodents in captivity till April, 1930. Certainly, it was recommended that the species was extinct, until Dr. Israel Aharoni found a nest of Syrian Hamsters on Mount Appo in Syria. The young hamsters were transferred to the Hebrew University at Jerusalem. The breeding program was not completely prosperous at first, due to the fact four from the eight hamsters escaped, and then a female died as a result of a fight using the only surviving male. From this unpromising starting, however, the male mated successfully with both the other females and, within a year, 3 hundred and sixty-four offspring had been reared.

A number of the progeny had been sent to Dr. Edward Hindle in England and, possibly by means of breeding stock in the London Zoo, Golden Hamsters became available for the pet-owning public. It was not till the commence with the Second World War that these hamsters had been observed alive in North America. It is remarkable to reflect that all such hamsters kept throughout the world currently are believed to be the direct descendants from that nest discovered on Mount Appo more than half a century ago.

Hibernation

An uncommon and typically disconcerting habit of hamsters is their capacity to hibernate if environmental situations are unfavorable. This is a natural trait, which to some extent is now much less apparent in domesticated stock. The hamster’s physique temperature falls from the typical amount of about 37 C (98.7 F) to somewhat above the environmental temperature. The respiratory price is barely one breath a minute, whereas below normal situations the figure reaches as much as one hundred or a lot more. Because the heart beat may also be as low as four contractions per minute, compared with five hundred per minute inside the active animal, towards the casual observer a hibernating hamster appears dead. A fall in temperature, coupled with declining periods of light, will trigger hamsters to enter this torpid state.

Clearly, within a area in the residence heated for the duration of cold climate, such behavior is less probably to take place. To encourage a hibernating hamster to wake from its sleep, transfer it to a warm position exactly where it might awake gradually. A temperature in excess of 20 C (68 F) is excellent. Steadily the hamster’s breathing will grow to be apparent, and its body will warm up as blood flow to the skin increases. In the event you find out a hamster apparently dead in the nest, treat it in this solution to establish regardless of whether or not it has merely entered a torpid state.

Other factors also influence a hamster’s readiness to enter a state of dormancy. These consist of the provision of a very deep layer of bedding material and, substantially, an chance for the hamster to store food. Hoarding behavior is pretty organic, with … READ MORE ...

Cancer – The Dreaded Death Sentence for Dogs

The word cancer sends chills up our collective spines as we are given the news about a lump or a growth or an enlargement in any area of our body. Sometimes there is no enlarged organ or tissue, but we just are not feeling right or strong or our health is not what it used to be. We sometimes can even be weaker than normal and have no appetite.

Maybe we are getting sick more often that normal or that is expected during times of the year when we are normally healthy and active. Maybe we just do not feel like doing the things that we normally do and there is no emotional or psychological explanation for our malaise or lack of energy.

Cancer is a term that has come to be known as a “death sentence” for most of us. When reading early obituaries or death certificates when doing family history research, quite often the cause of death is listed as cancer. For normal cells to change and not respond to the normal control and feedback mechanism that the body employs to control cell growth and division there has to be some kind of change in the chemical structure of the cells that is passed on to other daughter cells during the process of cell division or mitosis.

This loss of control or the abnormal division process creates cells and groups of cells that are under their own control and do not respond to the signals the body gives normally dividing cells to divide or to stop dividing or to grow or not to grow. The mechanisms that develop to have this control mechanism not work are partially known, but mostly the sequence and frequency of this developmental process is still to be discovered.

The center of this process is in the genome of the cell. The chemicals and molecules that make up the genetic code of normal cells have programmed into them the response and feedback mechanisms necessary to have the organism develop as needed and in an expected sequence to the adult form with all of the parts and organs working properly.

When something disturbs this process in the genetic code and the code is changed, the normalcy is lost and the cells that are present are in control of their own destiny and do not respond to normal signals given to them by the body for maintenance and growth. Sometimes these cells just grow in the local area and change by simply dividing and expanding in the space where they begin. If they do not spread to other areas by way of the lymphatic or circulatory system, then we consider these benign growths. The first thing that we check is all of the regional lymph nodes when we do a physical exam. If they are enlarged, then we already know that the tumor has spread throughout the body.

Cancer can be treated, usually by surgical excision of the lump, but sometimes conventional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation is used. What we have to do is look at the cost and the potential for quality of life as treatment would progress and then make the decision to treat or not to treat based on what is good for the dog.… READ MORE ...
